When we announced to our families this past winter that we had a little Gavin on the way, they were very excited, and some were already anxious to plan the baby shower!
It is crazy how fast eight months passes us by, and now we are on the eight-week countdown! Many of our family and friends live in either Northern or Southern California, although Jason has some relatives that reside on the East coast.
So one party turned quickly into two baby shower parties! I wanted to still be able to travel comfortably on a plane, so we chose the month of May to celebrate Baby Gavin!
The first celebration was on May 4, 2014, and was held at my dad Rick’s house in sunny Walnut Creek. He has a beautiful house on the hill with a large luscious backyard, perfect for having a baby bash!
In fact, he even got married at his home to my amazing stepmother Lynne over ten years ago, so lots of great memories and celebrations.
The party was a “bow and ‘stache” theme, with the question “What will Baby Gavin be?” since we want to be surprised with the gender of our little one. My talented sister-in-laws Imelda and Svetlana and step mom Lynne hosted the incredible baby shower.
These women are party planner extraordinaires! They are extremely organized, and creative perfectionists and their decorations were gorgeous.
From pink bow and blue mustache decorations to homemade desserts consisting of a delicious chocolate ganache cake, red and blue velvet cupcakes, fresh baked cookies, and, of course, a candy bar!
My crafty sister-in-law Imelda made larger than life pom poms, paper fans and the most adorable onesie banner for the party. My step mom Lynne frivolously made sure the house was spotless and cooked yummy food to satisfy our appetites! My cousin Melissa planned the fun baby games, of course measuring my belly and trying to figure out the baby food flavors, yuck (I can’t wait to make my own)!
There were many guests that we hadn’t seen since our wedding three years ago, and some even further from our past. It was a blessing to have so many people that we love all in one place. I wish the day could have lasted longer!
Although with one baby shower completed, I couldn’t wait to celebrate the next shower in Southern California, which was only a few weeks after.
When Jason and I were looking for our first home, we wanted to be near a park with lots of open green space for our future children to play. Things couldn’t have worked out more perfectly when our offer got accepted on a house that was right across the street from a huge park and elementary school.
There is a gazebo, picnic tables, a volleyball court, soccer field, a play structure and even grills at the park! I always knew that I wanted to have a party there someday, so we chose to have baby shower #2 just steps away from our home. The celebration was on May 24 and being that it was Memorial Day weekend, we decided to have a casual “Gavin Baby-Q” theme.
My sister-in-law Imelda and brother Blandon hosted this party (they spoil me), and was inspired by our invitation to create decorations with mason jars, natural raffia, and pinwheels.
I loved the Baby-Q idea because it has such a tie in with my obsession with food. My brother Blandon was ready to be the BBQ master, helping to grill and prepare all of the food for the party. After a Costco trip, our cart was loaded up with all the BBQ essentials; pulled pork, sausages, Hawaiian sweet rolls, fresh fruit, and salad.
I wanted to have some “grown up” drinks at the Baby-Q, so after experimenting with a blackberry bourbon lemonade recipe, we created what was called “Papa’s Punch” for the party.
On the big celebration day, the gazebo at the park was decorated with beautiful banners, whimsical pom poms, and pinwheels in mason jars all made by Imelda, I was so impressed!
She also made her famous white chocolate cranberry oatmeal cookies (she also made these for our wedding), and the most delicious vanilla almond cupcakes and chocolate peanut butter cupcakes topped with the cutest mini pinwheels.
Everyone loved the food, dessert and decorations and I couldn’t be more grateful for to my family for such a wonderful celebration for Baby Gavin!
These incredible moments with family and friends reminds me of the importance of community and being part of that support system that everyone needs as they go through this adventure of life together. It was so heartwarming to see people gather together who we may not see every day, but still support us through life’s big surprises.
I am so humbled and comforted to know that Baby Gavin will already have a strong community of amazing and loving people to watch them grow through each part of their life’s journey.
We are overwhelmed by the love and kindness that we have received from our family and friends who have made such a positive impact in our lives. Thank you to all that continue to support and guide us! You have influenced and inspired our lives in ways you could never imagine, and we are forever grateful. We look forward to sharing more unforgettable moments with you and our growing family!
